Discordance and Harmony

FUMAGE was a surrealist painting technique formalized by Wolfgang Paalen, who used the smoke from a kerosene lamp to create marks on canvas and paper. Using raw canvas, I expose this material to various forms of fire: candles, lighters,  fireworks, smokebombs, etc. Some canvas is first stretched to my studio desk for months, exposing the material to the residue of time and labor.  In this process, I question the distinction between mediums, effectively creating photographic paintings.
